Fortune and Hong Kong sparkle

The Fortune Pink diamond, an exceptionally rare giant gemstone, has sold for 28.4 million Swiss Francs (HK$226 million) at a Christie's auction in Geneva.

At 18.18 carats, the jewel mined in Brazil is the largest pear-shaped "fancy vivid pink" diamond to go under the hammer. Christie's noted that the carat weight, 18.18, is a lucky number in Asia, where it signifies "definite prosperity."

"Very aptly it was purchased by an Asian customer," said Rahul Kadakia, Christie's international head of jewelry.

On Friday, the 11.15-carat Williamson Pink Star diamond sold in Hong Kong for HK$453.2 million, setting a price-per-carat at auction for any diamond or gemstone, according to Sotheby's .

The world record for a pink diamond was set in 2017, when the CTF Pink Star was sold in Hong Kong for HK$553.9 million.
