A primary school seven-a-side football tournament drew unexpected online attention after a livestream attracted more than 1,000 viewers, with one player’s physique becoming a talking point on social media.
The HK Inter-Primary Schools Competition, organized by the Hong Kong Football Association, staged its semi-finals, third-place playoff and final at MacPherson Playground over the weekend.
Online interest surged after an official round-of-16 promotional poster featured a Man Kiu Association Primary School player whose height and strong build stood out among competitors. The image circulated widely online and triggered debate, with some netizens questioning whether he was of primary school age, while others voiced support.
Everton Camargo of Lee Man publicly backed the student, writing: “He played very well. Good job, brother.”
On the pitch, Man Kiu defeated St Paul’s College Primary School 6-0 in the last 16 and upset Ying Wa Primary School in the quarter-finals. The team later lost to St Edward’s Catholic Primary School in the semi-finals but secured third place after winning a penalty shootout against Christian & Missionary Alliance Sun Kei Primary School.
Peak viewership of the association’s online broadcast exceeded 1,000, with some viewers commenting that the audience was larger than that of local professional matches.
According to school information, Man Kiu Association Primary School has a diverse student intake, while its football team has recorded multiple district-level achievements in recent years.
