Hong Kong's food safety watchdog has ordered a retailer to recall a batch of imported Aptamil baby formula due to possible contamination with a heat-stable toxin produced by Bacillus cereus.
The Centre for Food Safety on Tuesday instructed retailer Baby HK to stop selling, remove from shelves, and recall the affected Aptamil Profutura DUO Pre D (800g) product. The batch, manufactured in Germany, has a use-by date of April 20, 2027.
The action follows a global recall of certain Aptamil formula batches by German authorities. The CFS's preliminary investigation found that 54 cans were imported, of which 34 were distributed.
Bacillus cereus is common in the environment. Unhygienic food processing or storage can lead to its growth and production of cereulide, a heat-stable toxin. Consumption can cause gastrointestinal symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea.
The CFS urged the public not to let infants consume the affected batch and to seek medical attention if any discomfort occurs after consumption. Members of the public can call Baby HK's hotline at 3586 1399 for recall inquiries during office hours.
