Hong Kong’s key tea event, Tea Round, has returned to the cultural landmark PMQ until Sunday (Feb 1), inviting enthusiasts on a cultural journey through exhibitions and workshops that go beyond flavour.
Embracing the theme “Blended,” the event features over 50 local and overseas brands spanning tea, gastronomy, and tea-ware, marking its most extensive lineup so far.
Seamlessly blending tradition with modernity, the event highlights the 60-year-old heritage brand Ming Heung Tea Shop, presenting its unique charcoal-roasted Chiu Chow Gongfu tea, while fourth-generation merchant Chinese Tea Gallery offers an exclusive Puerh blended jasmine tea, a traditional blend once common in tea houses.
Local brewery Mezzanine Makers innovatively blends the Chinese medicinal genlian root into its “Herbal Tonic Tea,” inspired by the shared aftertaste of tea and traditional medicine.
Visitors can also enjoy exclusive culinary collaborations designed to pair with tea. Highlights include the Michelin-recommended Tim Ho Wan, offering event-exclusive mini Ma Lai Go (steamed sponge cake) and Char Siu rice.
A mobile tea truck will feature milk tea masters from Hiang Kie Coffee, Kam Yee Siu, and Chart Coffee, offering demonstrations and free tastings at designated times.
Alongside a strong local presence, the international lineup includes tea merchants from Fuzhou showcasing Fujian Gongfu Tea, an Intangible Cultural Heritage. 2Fan Tea Studio from Taitung and Nantou brings a unique terroir tea experience led by two active tea competition experts.
Taipei bar Astea will serve tea cocktails, with representative Adrian Ng noting that Hong Kong consumers form an important part of their audience.
“We do not expect business turnover during the events,” he said. “Participating is simply about communicating with Hong Kong customers and increasing our exposure in the city.”
Beyond tea and food, the selection of tea-ware is vast. Brands popular with the cultural youth, such as momogawanou and tete, offer minimalist yet artistic ceramics.
Independent artist Xi Jibao, based in "Porcelain Capital" Jingdezhen, brought his brand Cha Xi Teaware to Hong Kong for the first time.
He observed that customers here respond enthusiastically to his handmade pieces and appreciate the skill involved. “While the younger generation is gradually developing the habit of drinking tea, their spending power has yet to be enhanced,” he noted.
The event also emphasizes immersion alongside shopping. Puerh enthusiasts can explore the “Puerh Blending Exhibition”, the “Puerh Tasting Session”, and the “One Day Puerh Master Experience” to decipher the “Batching code” on tea cakes and understand the history of Hong Kong blending.
For milk tea lovers, the “One Day Milk Tea Master Experience” allows participants to blend tea bases, explore aromas, and pair them with different evaporated milks to create a personal favourite.
The opening hours of the event will be extended from 11am to 7pm on the final day. A limited edition Blended Tea Kit souvenir is available for purchase on site.
