The government-established relief fund for victims of the deadly Wang Fuk Court fire in Tai Po has grown to approximately HK$4 billion, including HK$3.7 billion in public donations and HK$300 million from the government, to provide long-term assistance for rebuilding lives.
Public donations continue to pour in following the tragic blaze that claimed over 160 lives.
As of noon yesterday, the Support Fund for Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po has received about HK$3.7 billion from the community, bringing the total to roughly HK$4 billion when combined with the government’s initial HK$300 million contribution.
The fund will support residents in reconstructing their homes and provide sustained help over the long term.
More than 1,000 units remain available for longer-term accommodation.
Transitional housing and Housing Society projects across different districts can still offer around 500 units.
Additionally, about 900 units are available at Po Tin Interim Housing in Tuen Mun and the Kai Tak “Sail 1331” project.
As of yesterday morning, 581 residents are staying in hotel rooms coordinated by the Home Affairs and Youth Bureau, while 559 are housed in youth hostels or camps.
Another 3,513 residents are already settled in transitional housing, Housing Society projects, or Po Tin Interim Housing managed by the Housing Bureau.
A government-backed online platform for material donations, developed with the IT sector, remains active.
Groups and individuals can register items for donation.
So far, around 2,000 registrations have been received, with roughly 30 percent from organisations and the rest from private citizens.
Items offered cover food and drinks, clothing, daily necessities, bedding, electrical appliances, and more.
Authorities are matching these donations to residents’ actual needs through relevant bureaus, departments, and service groups.
To date, over 29,000 items have been distributed to various locations, with matching and delivery continuing.
