Several Drainage Services Department (DSD) mascots displayed along Tsui Ping River in Kwun Tong were found vandalized on Tuesday morning.
At about 8.51am, a security guard on patrol discovered that three figures of the department’s mascot “Drainy,” which had been installed on park railings, had been dismantled and thrown into the river.
Police arrived at the scene, cordoned off the damaged wooden supports, and classified the case as criminal damage for further investigation.
The former one-kilometer nullah near King Yip Street has been revitalized into Tsui Ping River, a project designed not only to reduce flood risk but also to create a green public space for the community.
The new Tsui Ping Riverside Promenade features six landscape decks and seven pedestrian walkways to enhance connectivity with surrounding neighborhoods.
To mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, 75 uniquely styled “Drainy” figurines were placed along the promenade for residents to take photos with.
“Drainy,” known as the DSD’s “KOL,” is named after the stormwater and wastewater managed by Hong Kong’s drainage and sewerage systems. The mascot is often featured in public education campaigns promoting the message: “Clean up our water, prepare for the rainy day.”
