Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu on Saturday wrapped up his APEC trip in Gyeongju, South Korea, by praising President Xi Jinping’s warm encouragement for Hong Kong and pledging full government backing for the 2026 summit in neighboring Shenzhen, while touting new trade, tourism, and diplomatic wins.
Lee described his brief exchange with Xi as heartfelt, noting the leader’s consistent care and motivation for him to keep advancing the city’s social, economic, and political agenda.
He expressed excitement over Shenzhen hosting next year’s gathering, promising Hong Kong’s readiness to assist in any capacity under central guidance and APEC protocols.
The summit yielded multiple gains. APEC leaders issued a declaration prioritizing free trade, resilient supply chains, and the themes of connection, innovation, and prosperity.
Hong Kong deepened ties with host South Korea—its fifth-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade up 20 percent year-on-year and Korean visitor arrivals doubling to 850,000 in 2024.
New cultural and travel links include a film-training MOU with Busan and surging flights to Busan and Daegu.
Relations with ASEAN nations advanced through talks with Singapore’s prime minister, paving the way for a high-level civil-service visit, and with Indonesia’s president on potential arts exchanges.
Malaysia’s leader signaled optimism for a Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Kuala Lumpur by year-end.
In the Middle East, Abu Dhabi’s crown prince flagged the city as a prime investment hub and gateway to mainland China.
Lee also reinforced Hong Kong’s global financial stature in discussions with the IMF managing director, citing the fund’s recognition of its resilience.
The administration plans to build on these connections through follow-up delegations and sustained engagement with partner economies.
