Battery suspected in Siu Sai Wan flat fire, 5 residents hospitalized

A mid-level flat at Cheerful Garden on Siu Sai Wan Road caught fire around 7 pm Tuesday, sending five residents to hospital.

Footage showed flames erupting from an air conditioner position at the window with thick smoke billowing skyward. Firefighters extinguished the blaze while over 100 residents evacuated with assistance or independently.

Four male and one female resident aged 12 to 86 required hospital treatment at Eastern Hospital for smoke inhalation. Police preliminary investigation suggests a suspected overheated battery caused the fire, with no current evidence of criminal involvement.
