The Water Supplies Department (WSD) has resolved concerns over black particles in Kam Chun Court’s water supply, identifying them as harmless asphalt and implementing filtration and cleaning measures to ensure safe drinking water.
Earlier this week, the estate’s management reported a small number of cases involving black particles in the water supply of three buildings, prompting immediate investigations.
Water samples were collected and tested, confirming that the water quality meets Hong Kong’s safety standards.
The particles were identified as asphalt, an inert substance that poses no health risks to residents.
The department traced the issue to a water supply adjustment conducted on September 12 to support maintenance work on upstream public water mains.
The adjustment caused increased water pressure, which stirred up minor sediment in a reservoir, allowing small amounts of asphalt particles to enter the internal water systems of the affected buildings over the past few days.
To resolve the problem, the WSD has enhanced the filtration systems of the affected buildings’ water pipes and deployed a dedicated team to assist residents with cleaning water meters as needed.
The estate’s management has also thoroughly cleaned all water tanks and internal pipes within the buildings to prevent further issues.
The situation is now under control, with the number of related inquiries dropping significantly from 30 cases reported yesterday (Sep 17) to just six by noon today.
The WSD is continuing to monitor water quality at Kam Chun Court and is maintaining close communication with the estate’s management, local councilors, and residents to ensure any further needs are addressed promptly.
Ongoing follow-up measures will be implemented based on the situation to ensure the water supply remains safe and reliable.
