The Airport Authority has activated its emergency operations center following the issuance of the No. 8 storm signal as Typhoon Tapah approaches Hong Kong. The authority expects generally normal airport operations tonight but warns some flights tonight and tomorrow morning will be affected.
Passengers are advised to check flight status with their airlines before heading to the airport and should only travel after confirming their seats. The authority will implement flight rescheduling measures to coordinate Sunday's takeoffs and landings while maintaining close communication with airlines and the Civil Aviation Department.
Additional facilities including a temporary rest area with 500 chairs and mobile charging stations have been set up to assist affected passengers. More staff will be deployed to distribute bottled water, snacks and blankets to those in need. Some restaurants and convenience stores will operate around the clock during the storm.
Under the No. 8 signal, the airport's taxi service will adopt an electronic queuing system, allowing passengers to take a ticket from a kiosk or via a mobile app instead of waiting in line. All ground public transport between the city and the airport, except the Airport Express, will be suspended or reduced to limited service. Two staff rest centers will also be opened at the airport to accommodate over 400 employees.
