Police have arrested two local male drivers aged 35 and 52 during an undercover operation targeting illegal taxi services in Kwai Chung on Wednesday. Officers from the New Territories South Regional Traffic Department posed as passengers through online platforms, hiring two private vehicles that lacked valid hire car permits.
The suspects were apprehended upon reaching their destinations on suspicion of "illegally driving a motor vehicle for hire or reward" and "using a vehicle without third-party insurance." Both arrested individuals have been released on bail pending further investigation and are required to report back to police in late September. The involved vehicles have been impounded for additional examination.

According to Hong Kong's Road Traffic Ordinance, operating vehicles for hire without a valid permit carries maximum penalties of HK$10,000 fines and six months' imprisonment for first offenses, increasing to HK$25,000 fines and twelve months' imprisonment for subsequent convictions. Police reminded the public that illegal hire vehicles may invalidate third-party insurance coverage, potentially leaving passengers and other road users without protection in case of accidents.
