Kwong Kau, the former father-in-law of murdered socialite Abby Choi Tin-fung, is facing legal action over unpaid ad valorem and buyer's stamp duties, along with related penalties.
The Secretary for Justice filed a writ with the High Court on Tuesday (July 29) to recover payments from Kwong for the outstanding ad valorem stamp duties, buyer's stamp duties, and associated late penalties and interest.
According to the writ, Kwong failed to pay the ad valorem stamp duty of HK$7.826 million and buyer's stamp duties of HK$10.92 million after purchasing a property on July 11, 2019.
As Kwong has delayed the payment of buyer's stamp duty for over two months, he is required to pay a penalty equivalent to 10 times the amount of the stamp duty, which is about HK$109.2 million.
Additionally, the Secretary for Justice is requesting that Kwong pay the additional stamp duty, related interests and legal costs, bringing the total amount to HK$127 million.
Separately, Kwong was sued by HSBC in February for defaulting on a mortgage for a flat in Sheung Man Court, Kwai Chung, where he borrowed over HK$2.07 million, which is scheduled for a hearing on October 8 at the District Court.
