The incident, shared on the forum LIHKG on July 28, shows a man allegedly driving a Maserati at 200 km/h—double Japan's highway speed limit—while his female companion filmed the stunt.
The controversial footage captures multiple traffic violations, including the driver removing both hands from the wheel at high speed.
Initially shared on Instagram Stories, the clips quickly drew fury from netizens who criticized the couple for endangering lives and damaging Hong Kong's international reputation.
The online backlash was swift and severe, with Hong Kong netizens flooding forums to express their condemnation of the couple's actions. Comments included sentiments that the couple was destroying Hong Kong's reputation overseas and deserved to be banned from Japan permanently.
Others highlighted and criticized that some people believe they can do unreasonable things while in other countries, which makes the image of Hong Kong worse.
Japanese traffic laws impose strict penalties for such offenses. Exceeding speed limits by 40 km/h can result in fines up to ¥100,000 (HK$5,288), and more severe cases may lead to criminal charges.
The incident has prompted online activists to compile evidence and draft formal complaints to Japanese authorities.
This case follows a similar incident in 2024, where a Hong Kong driver was banned from Japan after being caught speeding.
Legal experts have warned that such behavior could lead to serious consequences, including potential imprisonment under Japanese law.
