The former Legislative Council Secretary-General will officially step down on September 16, 2025, according to an internal university email.
Appointed in September 2024 for a three-year term, Chen succeeded Eric Ng Shu-pui—the ousted right-hand man of former CUHK President Rocky Tuan—amid a leadership reshuffle.
University authorities confirmed they will initiate recruitment procedures "in due course."
Sources pointed out that Chen struggled to adapt to his new responsibilities at the institution and opted to hand in his resignation.
The seasoned administrator brings a diverse resume, having served as Deputy Secretary for Education before his tenure as Legislative Council Secretary-General. Prior to government service, Chen held positions at the Hong Kong Jockey Club.
