The Hong Kong Sports Press Association (HKSPA) launched the 26th International Sports Press Association (AIPS) Asia Congress on Monday, gathering nearly 100 media representatives from 30 countries and regions to explore the future of sports journalism.
At the opening ceremony, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law declared 2025 a landmark year for Hong Kong’s sports scene.
The city will host high-profile events, including the grand opening of the Kai Tak Sports Park, the Hong Kong Football Festival 2025, and the National Games in December—a joint venture with Guangdong and Macao.
“These events will cement Hong Kong’s role as a hub for international sports,” Law said.
She highlighted the prestige of the National Games, quoting Chinese table tennis captain Ma Long: “For many sports—ping pong in particular—winning a National Games gold medal is harder than winning an Olympic gold, because the athletes usually already hold world champion titles.”
Law emphasized that these events go beyond competition. “They showcase Hong Kong as a centre for major international sports and create a festive atmosphere across our city,” she said.
Addressing the attending journalists, she added: “To all our sports journalist friends here, we are going to keep you busy. You will be our partners in capturing thrilling moments on the stage and the compelling human stories behind them. Your work will bring these events to life for audiences worldwide.”
She invited delegates to experience Hong Kong’s iconic attractions during their stay and expressed hopes for extensive media coverage of the upcoming events. “I eagerly anticipate seeing your reports on your platforms,” she concluded.
The five-day congress will feature discussions on sports media trends, digital storytelling, and the evolving role of journalists in major sporting events. With 2025 set to be a packed year for Hong Kong sports, the city is poised to make headlines globally.
