Piu Sik parade and bun scrambling set for Buddha’s birthday

Cheung Chau’s annual Bun Festival returns with its iconic Piu Sik Parade and thrilling Bun Scrambling Competition, promising a day filled with heritage and excitement. This year, the festival falls on the Buddha’s Birthday on Monday (May 5).

The anticipated Piu Sik Parade will attract crowds of locals and visitors, where children will don costumes representing famous celebrities and political figures.

This year's parade will include depictions of famous athletes and political figures, such as Security Secretary Chris Tang Ping-keung.

The origins of the Piu Sik Parade date back to the early 20th century when this tradition was introduced to Cheung Chau from mainland China. In earlier years, the floats drew inspiration from folklore. Recently, they have evolved to incorporate themes relevant to current affairs, often using satire in their themes.

Piu Sik Parade
Date: May 5, Monday 
Time: 1.30pm 
Route: The parade will begin from Pak She Street, then pass through New Hing Street, Tai Hing Tai Road, Secondary School Road, Chung Hing Street, Tai Choi Yuen Road, Tai Sun Back Street, Hing Lung Main Street, and New Hing Back Street. The parade will make its finale back at Pak She Street.

Bun Scrambling Competition
Date: May 5, Monday 
Time: 11.30 pm 
Location: Cheung Chau Pak Tai Temple Playground

The competition consists of the men’s and women’s categories. There will also be a special award for the participant who collects the most “peace buns.”

Free tickets for the competition will be handed out starting from 10 pm near the Cheung Chau Fire Station, on a first-come, first-served basis.
