Ir Kwong Ching Wai Alkin JP, Vice Chairman & Chief Executive of Hong Yip Holdings Ltd., garners the Directors Of The Year Awards 2020 in the ‘Non-listed Companies Categories’.

Sharing his leadership philosophy, Kwong tells of being enlightened by the teaching of Jesus while studying in university in Canada. “Though of humble origins, Jesus became a saviour who left mankind a legacy that helped shape the values and beliefs of generations of people across the world, even to this day. I believe spiritual meekness, modesty and humility are essential qualities of competent leaders, and I embrace this people-focused servant leadership principle and espouse it as my business philosophy.”

Kwong points to the 4Rs – Right People, Right Direction, Right System and Right Timing – as the crux to enhancing corporate governance and achieving business success; and that the role of a CEO is to define and implement these 4Rs by advocating different strategies at different stages. In terms of people management, he says hiring and retaining the ‘right people’ for the job is a top priority. “The principles of servant leadership direct the company to adopt appropriate action and behavior to achieve growth among its people and within the organization.”

Looking ahead

Kwong notes that the Awards offer directors an excellent opportunity to review their companies’ practices, and evaluate if there’s any room for further improvement. “It sets a high standard of corporate governance across different industries, encouraging other industry players to follow and, hence, propel the entire industry forward.”

In winning the Awards, Kwong expresses his heartfelt gratitude to The Hong Kong Institute of Directors for the valuable opportunity to reflect on our company’s development. He also pays tribute to his team for their staunch support and boundless contribution.
