A man driving an electric scooter was hit by a motorcycle when he illegally crossed a road in Macau in the early hours of Thursday, leaving both drivers injured, police said.
The accident occurred around 2am near the taxi stand at the Qingmao Port Macau checkpoint on Canal dos Patos. A man in his 30s, identified as a Macau resident surnamed Chau, attempted to cross the road in a non-designated crossing area on his electric scooter. A motorcycle driven by a man in his 20s, approaching from the right, collided with the scooter, throwing Chau and his vehicle several meters before landing on the ground.
Both drivers sustained minor injuries. Chau was taken to hospital with multiple abrasions and later discharged. The motorcyclist was treated at the scene and did not require hospitalization. Both passed breathalyzer tests, ruling out drink driving.
Police said Chau violated Macau's Road Traffic Law, which prohibits motorized or non-motorized scooters on public roads, and also breached rules against crossing roadways outside designated crossings. He will face charges.
