The Ministry of Transport said Sunday will mark the peak of cross-regional passenger flow as the nine-day mainland Spring Festival holiday concludes tomorrow.
National railways are expected to handle 17.93 million passenger trips. An additional 2,203 trains will be scheduled to increase capacity on popular routes and add the frequency of overnight high-speed rail services.
For road transport, expressways traffic volume is expected to exceed 71 million vehicle trips today, marking the highest traffic day of the holiday. During the return travel rush, significant congestion and slow traffic are expected on major expressways, including the Beijing–Hong Kong and Macau, Beijing–Shanghai, and Shanghai‑Chongqing routes.
In addition, around 1.42 million passengers are expected to travel by waterway, with the Qiongzhou Strait experiencing its return travel peak. Authorities have arranged extra ferry services to accommodate the increased demand.
