In a grand celebration of its 150th anniversary, St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is set to host the 2nd SJC Cup International Chess Championship from April 11 to 13, 2025.

This prestigious event will feature eight world-class chess champions from mainland China, Hong Kong, Kazakhstan, India, Mongolia, and Vietnam. The tournament is poised to be a thrilling showcase of skill, strategy, and international camaraderie.
The opening ceremony promises to be a significant affair with the attendance of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and consuls from India, Vietnam, Mongolia, and Kazakhstan, highlighting the event's global importance and the support it garners.
A special highlight of the championship will be a unique match between the AI system DeepSeek and the tournament's overall champion. This face-off is not just a game but a symbolic representation of the fusion between technology and tradition in the realm of chess. DeepSeek, representing the next generation of AI, will test its mettle against human strategic thinking, echoing historic man-versus-machine matches like IBM’s DeepBlue versus Garry Kasparov in 1996/1997 and Google DeepMind’s AlphaGo against Lee Sedol in 2017.
The SJC Cup 2025 is more than just a chess tournament; it is a platform to inspire and engage the youth in chess and artificial intelligence. It aims to promote strategic thinking, creativity, and resilience among young minds. Additionally, the event supports China’s Belt & Road Initiative by fostering cultural and sports exchanges and showcases Hong Kong’s diverse strengths beyond its financial prowess, highlighting its capabilities in technology and sports.
Chess enthusiasts from around the globe can look forward to witnessing this high-level competition through live broadcasts, featuring SJC alumni and "Triple Crown" winners Daniel Lam (FM) and current student Boris Chan (CM), among other international masters.
The tournament will kick off on April 11 (Fri) with the opening ceremony. April 12-13 will feature intense matches broadcast globally. On April 13, the "Chess for All" segment will see eight masters playing against 64 young players, symbolizing the 64 squares of a chessboard.
