The match saw Hong Kong initially trailing, with scores at 0:7 and 7:14, before rallying back. Newcomers Rory Stewart-Cox and Shiven Dukhande were pivotal, scoring critical tries that turned the tide of the game. Veteran Cado Lee Ka-to praised the newcomers for their performance, highlighting the team's determination to reclaim the Claymore in tomorrow's final on March 30.
Hong Kong's comeback began with Harry Sayers breaking through Japan's defense, scoring twice to narrow the gap to 12:14 by halftime. Captain James Christie then scored early in the second half, giving Hong Kong the lead at 19:14. Subsequent tries by Max Denmark, Stewart-Cox, Dukhande, and Bryn Phillips solidified the lead.
Sayers shared his personal connection to the venue, noting the significance of scoring at Kai Tak, where his father was involved in constructing the new Chek Lap Kok Airport. He expressed a preference for playing in open-air conditions, contrasting with the previous day's closed roof, which he found dim.
The retractable roof at Kai Tak Stadium was opened, enhancing the atmosphere and Sayers' enjoyment of the game. He emphasized the team's resilience in coming from behind and the boost they receive from each other's support.
The final opponents for the men's team will be determined by the morning match between Japan and China. Regardless of the opponent, Sayers promised an exciting match for the fans.
Lee also commended the performance of newcomers Stewart-Cox and Dukhande, who scored in their debut at the Hong Kong Sevens. He noted the emergence of new talent and the team's quick adjustment on the field to exploit opportunities.
The Melrose Claymores finals are scheduled for tomorrow afternoon (Mar 30), with the women's final at 3.47 pm followed by the men's at 4.16 pm.
The men's final opponent will be decided by the last group match between Japan and China, while the women's opponent will be determined by the match between Thailand and Kazakhstan.
