Flight HX115, which departed at 12.20 pm, was scheduled to arrive in Hong Kong at 2.55 pm.
However, passengers reported hearing an explosion during the flight, followed by smoke filling the cabin.
A portable charger is suspected to have caused the fire.
Videos online showed crew and passengers using water and juice to put out the flames. One passenger described the scene as “like a movie.”
Hong Kong Airlines confirmed the fire was extinguished and the A320 landed safely with all 160 passengers and eight crew members. A replacement flight has been arranged.
