The proposed works included the construction of roads, four-span cycle track cum pedestrian bridges, cycle tracks, noise barriers, waterfront promenade cycle park cum skatepark and associated sitting-out areas.
During a Legislative Council meeting on Wednesday, Permanent Secretary for Development Doris Ho Pui-ling noted that no cycle park is currently available in the Islands District, making the new 1.6-hectare park beneficial for the community.
Regarding the parking lot concern, Ho expected that residents of Tung Chung would choose to ride their bicycles to the park, suggesting that private cars would not be the sole way to reach the park.
She added that a new mall is set to open in the nearby Oyster Bay, which will provide more parking spaces for the visitors.
Regarding the two proposed cycle tracks cum pedestrian bridges costing about HK$600 million, the department head of the Sustainable Lantau Office Raymond Ip Wai-man highlighted the remaining capacity for the two key crossings in the new town is expected to drop to 15 percent in 2029.
Ip emphasized the urgent need for pedestrian bridges to facilitate residents' access to the nearby malls, schools and other facilities.
Ho further explained that the bridges will divide pedestrian and car traffic while also connecting residents in the north to the Waterfront Promenade and recreational facilities, improving their quality of life.
