At around 6 am today, police were alerted by staff at a veterinary hospital on Kwai Fung Crescent.
They reported that a man had brought in a cat yesterday night (Feb 17) that was bleeding and appeared close to death.
Despite efforts to treat it, the cat, which was about 2 years old, succumbed to its injuries.
During treatment, the veterinary staff discovered unusual wounds on the cat and promptly contacted the police, suspecting foul play.
The police investigated the matter and subsequently arrested the cat owner on charges of animal abuse.
The incident took place at Harvest Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Hospital, which operates around the clock.
The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has taken custody of the deceased cat for further investigation.
