The bureau announced Thursday that seven applications, mainly involving public projects such as hospital expansion, waste management facilities and railway construction, were approved in the sixth batch of applications under the labor importation scheme for the construction sector.
It said the imported workers included plasterers, air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment technicians, firefighting equipment and overhead electricity lines technicians, which industry representatives considered have shortages.
It said in a Facebook post: “The scheme fully considered the rationale and circumstances of each application and can also meet the labor needs of the construction industry [in a timely manner]."
Currently, 9,109 approved quotas are valid, fewer than the 9,731 quotas approved in total, the bureau said, explaining that this was due to some projects granted with imported workers having ended and employers returning the quotas after hiring locals.
