In response to reports of unlicensed hawking of cable car tickets, the FEHD, in collaboration with the Lantau North Division of the Hong Kong Police Force, conducted a joint operation at Mei Tung Street, Tung Chung, yesterday (Jan 30). Officers disguised as customers gathered evidence at the stalls at the specified location.
It was discovered that a 49-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman, both holders of Hong Kong identity cards, were selling the tickets. FEHD officers promptly intervened, arresting and charging the individuals for illegal hawking without a license and causing obstruction in a public place.
During the operation, FEHD officers seized items including cable car ticket redemption vouchers, price tags, metal folding tables, and an Octopus Mobile POS (point of sale).
The FEHD reminds the public that according to the Public Health and Municipal Services Ordinance, street trading is prohibited unless one possesses a valid hawker license issued by the Department. Offenders will be prosecuted, and upon conviction, they face a maximum penalty of a HK$10,000 fine and six months' imprisonment. Additionally, the commodities and equipment involved will be seized and confiscated.
Furthermore, if the illegal hawking activities also obstruct a public place, the offender will be charged under the Summary Offenses Ordinance. Upon conviction, a maximum penalty of HK$25,000 or three months' imprisonment will be imposed.
