It was learned that most victims are from the mainland, with an average loss of HK$1 million per person.
In response to the recent cases, the Centre of Development and Resources for Students emailed students from some of the faculties requiring them to complete a questionnaire provided by the police by February 10.
The email also warned that those who do not complete the questionnaire by the deadline may be prohibited from entering the library and Learning Commons.
It is understood that both local and non-local students are required to finish the questionnaire, which consists of multiple-choice questions and can be completed in just a few minutes.
The initiative marks HKU as the second university to promote anti-scam questionnaires among students, following the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
