Lam was previously under fire for her office at the prime commercial building costing taxpayers more than HK$9.17 million in the 2023-24 financial year - including a hefty rent of HK$5.67 million, as the current government grapples with a widened fiscal deficit and a slowdown in the economy.
With the Admiralty office’s lease set to expire in May this year, the former headquarters of the Immigration Department would house Lam’s new workplace, which is currently under renovation.
Back in 2008, the government announced plans to relocate the departments housed in the Immigration Tower and two nearby government office towers elsewhere to open up the land for private redevelopment. The Immigration Department’s headquarters relocated to its new building in Tseung Kwan O in June last year.
