Nearly one-fifth of the 120,000 Chinese visitors left the city after midnight via land boundary control points, including about 9,000 travelers who left through the Lok Ma Chau border point.
The Department said more than 7,700 and 6,780 travelers opted to depart through Lo Wu and Shenzhen Bay Control Point respectively on New Year's Day under the extension of operating hours.
It said the overall operation of the control points and traffic was smooth after relevant departments deployed additional manpower to divert passenger and vehicular traffic. The services of cross-boundary coaches and overnight bus routes were also strengthened.
The Immigration Department noted that Disneyland, Ocean Park, Ngong Ping 360, the Peak Tram and the West Kowloon Cultural District were the most popular attractions visited by the tourists during the New Year's Eve and New Year holidays.
According to the Travel Industry Authority, around 220 mainland tour groups, involving 7,200 visitors, visited Hong Kong during the period, and 72 percent of them engaged in overnight itineraries.
