The Observatory said it would issue Standby Signal No. 1 on Thursday (Oct 24) at the earliest, as tropical cyclone Trami is forecast to approach within 800 kilometers of Hong Kong.
It is the first time the weather watchdog has projected the hoisting of a typhoon signal two days in advance.
According to the present forecast, Trami will intensify gradually and enter within 800 kilometers of the city later on Thursday to early Friday (Oct 25). It is forecast to move west in the general direction to the vicinity of Hainan Island.
Depending on the movement of Trami and the change in local wind conditions, the Observatory will assess the need for issuing the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3.
The watchdog noted that under the combined effect of Trami and the northeast monsoon that will reach southern China towards the weekend, it will be windy and cloudy with a few showers over the coast of southern China later on Friday and over the weekend.
