Wan Chai Promenade and Avenue of Stars to hold night markets: sources

Night markets could be coming to Wan Chai Promenade and Avenue of Stars as the government set to launch the "Night Vibes Hong Kong" campaign to revitalize the night economy.

The campaign's launch ceremony, hosted by Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po, will be held at 6.30 pm today at the Grand Stair of M+ in West Kowloon Cultural District.

Representatives from the catering and retail industries and participating organizations were also invited. 

"Night Vibes Hong Kong" aims to unite society and create an appealing atmosphere to attract citizens and tourists to go out at night. According to sources, night bazaars will be held on Wan Chai Promenade and the Tsim Sha Tsui Avenue of Stars in the near future.

Eric Chung Pok-man, the general officer of the Hong Kong Department Stores & Commercial Staff General Union, believes that having a variety of stores is critical to the success of a night bazaar. 

He hopes for an assessment to be carried out by the organizers or government to ensure that not many stalls will sell similar products.

The chairman of the Hong Kong Public-light Bus Owner & Driver Association Cheung Hon-wah hopes the government can ease restrictions so that minibuses are able to enter the restricted roads and residential estates to facilitate people going out after midnight.

He added that a convenient public transport system is vital in revitalizing the night economy, while it could also encourage minibus drivers who left the industry to return after a rise in businesses.
