Privacy watchdog arrests woman who doxxed her ex's new girlfriend

The privacy watchdog arrested a 39-year-old woman on Tuesday for allegedly disclosing the personal details of her ex-boyfriend's current partner on social media.

An investigation by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD) revealed that from August 2022 to May 2023, the 39-year-old revealed various pieces of the victim's personal information on three different chat groups on a social media platform, along with leaving negative comments against the victim.

The personal data disclosed included the victim's Chinese and English name, nickname, phone number, family situation, and personal photo.

The arrestee is currently out on bail, and the privacy watchdog will continue its investigation.

The watchdog warns members of the public that anyone who commits doxxing is liable to a fine of HK$1,000,000 and imprisonment for a maximum of five years.
