In the video, the man can be seen using the lid of a cage trying to suffocate the Malamute, with the animal’s neck stuck between the cage and the lid.
It is understood the video was first shared by the man’s wife on a WhatsApp chat group, with the couple asking for tips to “educate” their pet dog.
The video then circulated online, with a concerned citizen eventually filing a report to the police of the suspected animal abuse.
Police first responded to the scene - a residential unit at Ngau Pei Sha New Village in Shatin, and listed the case as a dispute. Further investigation found evidence of animal abuse, leading to the arrest of the man on suspicion of cruelty to animals.
Two Malamutes - a female aged seven months and a male aged 1.5 years old - were taken in by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals temporarily for check-ups. Initial checking found no superficial injuries on the dogs.
