Hong Kong Observatory has issued the amber rainstorm warning signal at 5.10pm, indicating rainfall exceeding 30 millimeters per hour.
The Observatory also reminded the public that there will be flooding in some low-lying and poorly drained areas. “People who are likely to be affected should take necessary precautions to reduce their exposure to risk posed by the heavy rain and flooding,” the Observatory added.
It also said that heavy rain may bring about flash floods and people should stay away from watercourses.
The thunderstorm warning was also issued at 2.18pm, and has been extended until 7pm.
“A few squally thunderstorms are expected to occur over Hong Kong, with intense gusts reaching 70 kilometers per hour or above. Members of the public are advised to stay indoors and avoid standing on high grounds when thunderstorms occur,” the Observatory said.
It also reminded the public to stay indoor and don’t stand on high ground. People should also keep away from highly conductive objects, trees or masts.
It added that people should listen to radio or watch television for traffic conditions and further announcements on the rainstorm.
Meanwhile, the Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force, with Tropical Storm Lupit estimated to be about 210 kilometers east-southeast of Hong Kong and forecasted to move northeast at about 12 kilometers per hour across the coastal waters of Guangdong.
The HKO said the rainbands and squalls associated with Lupit are affecting the coastal areas of Guangdong. Meanwhile, Lupit is gradually moving away from Hong Kong.
When Lupit no longer poses a threat to the territory, the Observatory will cancel all the Tropical Cyclone Warning Signals.
