Wan is currently detained for subversion after his participation in the 35+ primary election held in July last year.
Wan’s team announced that they have sent the resignation letter to the Director of Home Affairs Janice Tse Siu-wa, on behalf of Wan. His resignation of councilor will take effect tomorrow.
Wan wrote a letter to residents of Shek Yam, Wan’s constituency, and Hong Kong citizens. In the letter he said that he could no longer perform duties as a councilor, as he is arrested and is facing charges under national security law, as well as criminal charges.
He continued and said that, following the mass resignation of the democrats from the Legislative Council last year, today’s resignation as district councilor will mark the end of his 18-year political career.
Wan added that although he is now imprisoned, he will face challenges in jail proactively. He also hoped the public would understand his decision and said he will be back as soon as possible.
