Hui was one of dozens of people arrested in demonstrations across districts yesterday to commemorate the anniversary of the June 12 clashes last year in Admiralty, which launched the months-long social unrest.
Hui was subdued by officers with his hands zip-tiped behind his back, he told the press that he was detained on suspicion of joining an unlawful assembly.
“It was absurd. The arrest was arbitrary and unlawful because I was just giving an interview with the media. But officers pulled me away and arrested me,” Hui told the press.
“I think it is an retaliation for my lawsuit against the police, which I brought in the form of a private prosecution. It's very obvious, considering the time and the nature of arrest last night. I condemn the police for making such as arbitrary arrest.”
On Thursday, a magistrate agreed to summon an officer over the case where a 21-year-old student was shot in Sai Wai Ho last November. Hui filed the prosecution with money raised through crowdfunding.
Hui also brought a private lawsuit against a taxi driver whose vehicle rammed into a group of protesters last October in Sham Shui Po and another case demanding the force to reveal the chemical composition of the tear gas they used to disperse protesters.
