The catering, hotel and tourism sectors are being encouraged to tap into the growing Muslim-friendly tourism market by leveraging opportunities during Islamic festivals such as Eid al-Fitr, Commissioner for Tourism Angelina Cheung Fung Wing-ping said.
Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting observed by Muslims worldwide.
Cheung highlighted the growth of halal-certified restaurants, from 100 last year to nearly 150, with more expected.
"As more restaurants recognize the opportunities and economic benefits of catering to Muslim tourists, we are seeing increased interest in halal certification," she said.Cheung said more Chinese restaurants, particularly fine dining establishments, are being encouraged to obtain halal certification.
"Hong Kong is a culinary capital and visitors want to experience local flavors," Cheung said. "By offering halal-certified high-quality Chinese cuisine, we can also attract high-spending tourists."She stressed diversifying halal-friendly dining options to cater to all budgets and preferences.
