HK issues T1 signal as tropical cyclone looms

The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) hoisted the Standby Signal, No. 1, at 12.20pm on Friday, warning that a tropical cyclone within 800 kilometers of the city could bring adverse weather.

As of 1pm, the storm was centered approximately 560 kilometers southeast of Hong Kong and is forecast to drift slowly northwest or west-northwest, lingering in the area.

While the tropical depression currently has a relatively small circulation and remains more than 400 kilometers from Hong Kong, the No. 1 signal is expected to stay in effect for most of today.

The system is likely to intensify gradually over the next two days before potentially turning north toward the Taiwan Strait and eastern Guangdong coast, said the HKO.

However, the weather watchdog cautioned that significant uncertainty remains regarding the storm’s path. Depending on its movement, intensification, and proximity to the Pearl River Estuary, officials may consider issuing higher typhoon warning signals between tomorrow and Sunday.

In the meantime, Hong Kong is bracing for scorching heat, with temperatures soaring to 35 degrees Celsius or higher in some areas over the coming days. The extreme heat is expected to trigger sudden showers and squally thunderstorms.

Residents are advised to stay alert for weather updates and prepare for possible disruptions, particularly those with outdoor activities planned.
