Hong Kong cyclist Daniel Yip Hon-man achieved a significant milestone by securing a gold medal in the junior men's road race at the Asian Road Cycling Championships, marking a long-awaited achievement since homegrown cycling star Wong Kam-po won the race 34 years ago.
The event, held in Phitsanulok Province, Thailand, featured a total of 11 laps, each measuring 10.7 kilometers, culminating in an overall distance of 117.7 kilometers.
Yip clinched the top spot with an impressive time of 2 hours, 40 minutes, and 17 seconds, edging out the second-place cyclist from Iran and the bronze medalist from Thailand by just 0.3 seconds.
It is reported that Yip, who was once a "chubby boy" weighing 90 kilograms, put effort into rigorous training and was selected by Team Kern Pharma/Finisher as one of eight U23 riders to have training in Spain last year.
In addition to Yip's triumph, six Hong Kong athletes brought home a bronze medal in the mixed-team relay on the first day of the Championships.
