An umbilical cord blood unit was transferred from Guangdong to Hong Kong on Thursday to help a 5-year-old girl suffering from beta thalassemia major.
The patient is a Hong Kong resident currently receiving treatment at the Hong Kong Children's Hospital.
Her younger brother was born in mainland China and his cord blood was stored in Guangdong Cord Blood Bank.
The unit of umbilical cord blood stem cells was transported to Hong Kong today and is ready for the transplant operation scheduled to be carried out in October, the hospital said.
