In a bid to revitalize Hong Kong’s tourism sector, a number of supportive measures are to be introduced in the upcoming budget, including a monthly firework display and a redesigned multimedia light show “A Symphony of Lights”, according to sources.
Sources said the Hong Kong Tourism Board will be tasked to organize themed activities such as city walks and night runs, allowing tourists to pursue in-depth travel experiences in the city.
The plan also includes monthly fireworks displays and drone performances over Victoria Harbour overseen by the Tourism Board, with estimated costs in the hundreds of millions.
A daily multimedia light show “A Symphony of Lights” will also be redesigned to stay current with the latest trends.
Meanwhile, the budget is set to introduce measures to provide more dining and entertainment elements along the city’s waterfront to enhance its appeal, with the Development Bureau in charge of these projects, sources said.
During the recent Lunar New Year holiday, Hong Kong welcomed a total of 1.43 million visitors, of which approximately 1.255 million were from mainland China, surpassing the numbers from 2018.
However, local tourist attractions have been criticized for lacking innovation, and changes in post-pandemic tourist spending patterns have resulted in a decrease in repeat visitors.
According to sources, traditional marketing methods such as promoting Hong Kong restaurants and attractions may no longer be as effective, as tourists now seek more profound cultural experiences.
Legislative Council member Kitson Yang Wing-kit believes that the mentioned activities, especially the fireworks and drone performances, will help boost the tourism industry.
He also pointed out that the tourism patterns have changed, with young people showing a preference for in-depth exploration and photo opportunities. Themed activities can cater to the different tastes of tourists.
He suggested that the authorities make greater use of social media platforms and collaborate with travel agencies to promote group tours to Hong Kong.
