Police were alerted of a traffic accident on Monday which saw a 72-year-old taxi driver just a few inches away from driving his vehicle down a staircase in Mid-Levels after making a wrong turn.
The driver, named Au, was driving along 55 Robinson Road this morning after dropping off a passenger and is suspected of having taken a wrong turn before driving onto the pavement of a private estate.
Without realizing he went the wrong way, he drove along the pavement and slammed the brakes just in time - inches away from plunging down a staircase that connects the estate to the Central to Mid-Levels Escalator.
Both front wheels of the taxi were suspended in mid-air, while the staircase also sustained damage.
The driver was later rescued by firefighters who responded to the scene. Police also cordoned off the staircase and a section of the escalator before the taxi was towed away to safety.
No injuries were reported.
