Universal Pictures presents Song Sung Blue, a film adapted from a true-life documentary that once moved film festival audiences. At its heart is a quiet, deeply human story about two people who meet when life has stripped them down to their bare essentials.
Mike Sardina (Hugh Jackman) is a Vietnam War veteran struggling to survive on the gigging circuit. A recovering alcoholic, he repairs cars by day and performs by night, clinging to music as the one constant that gives his life meaning. Claire Stengl (Kate Hudson), a single mother raising two children, sings to keep her family afloat, performing night after night with resilience that masks her exhaustion.
Their paths cross in a modest venue, where Mike hears something familiar in Claire’s voice, and Claire finds unexpected courage in Mike’s melodies. What begins as musical recognition slowly turns into partnership. Together, they form Lightning and Thunder, a Neil Diamond tribute band that carries them from a small garage to dive-bar stages, and eventually to an unlikely rise in Milwaukee.
Under Craig Brewer’s gentle direction, the film moves beyond the idea of music as performance. Instead, it becomes a language of survival, love, and mutual healing. As setbacks and tragedy threaten to pull the pair apart, it is their shared devotion — to music and to each other — that offers a way forward.
Song Sung Blue is not a story about overnight success or youthful ambition. It is about second chances, about finding harmony after heartbreak, and about the quiet belief that dreams do not expire with age.
Four can’t-miss reasons
An award–winning team
Hugh Jackman (The Greatest Showman) and Kate Hudson (Almost Famous) share the screen for the first time, under the direction of Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow), a filmmaker known for giving voice to ordinary people with extraordinary emotional depth.
Classic Neil Diamond songs reimagined
Timeless hits such as Sweet Caroline and Forever in Blue Jeans are woven directly into the narrative, serving not just as musical highlights but as emotional milestones in the characters’ evolving relationship.
A true story that resonates
Inspired by the real-life couple behind the “Lightning and Thunder” tribute band, the film draws from more than 15 years of lived experience, grounding every performance and setback in authenticity.
A rich visual and musical journey
From dimly lit bars to radiant stage lights, the film recreates the warmth and grit of the 1990s live-music scene, offering a heartfelt tribute to an era where dreams were chased one song at a time.
Song Sung Blue is coming to the big screen on January 29.
