The recent surge in demand for the confectionery product known as "Dubai chocolate," which gained popularity on TikTok, has reportedly resulted in a global shortage of pistachios.
This chocolate bar, which consists of milk chocolate encasing pistachio cream and shredded pastry, was originally launched in 2021 by the Dubai-based Fix Dessert Chocolatier.
The product went viral after a TikTok video that accumulated over 120 million views, thus igniting widespread interest in the sweet delicacy.
Major chocolate manufacturers, including Lindt, Nestle, and Lidl, have reportedly begun producing their own versions of "Dubai chocolate," as reported by Metro UK.
The growing demand for both the original and its replicas has been identified as a contributing factor to the international pistachio shortage, as consumers are eager to take a bite of the treats.
According to the Financial Times, the price of pistachio kernels has escalated from US$7.65 per pound a year ago to approximately US$10.30 per pound currently.
The report further indicates that pistachio supplies were already under pressure following a disappointing harvest last year in the United States, the largest exporter of pistachios globally.
In California, some agricultural producers have begun transitioning from almond cultivation to pistachio farming, primarily due to the unfavorable pricing conditions associated with almonds.
