WhatsApp, one of the most popular instant communication apps owned by Meta, went down for nearly two hours on Tuesday, with users worldwide unable to send and receive messages.
The outage affected both personal chats as well as group chats. Users worldwide were flooding social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram with posts about being unable to send messages on the app.
WhatsApp Web was also affected by the issue.
Downdetector, a popular website that tracks outages across websites and applications, has reported a massive spike of reports about WhatsApp being down.
"We're aware that some people are currently having trouble sending messages and we're working to restore WhatsApp for everyone as quickly as possible," a spokesperson for WhatsApp parent company Meta Platforms said shortly after the outage.
Meta, previously known as Facebook, bought WhatsApp in 2014. It’s wildly popular especially outside of the U.S., where many people use it for everyday communication.
