Hugh Bowman
Mickley/John Size, 1st, Race 10
There are few jockeys in history that have the poise, patience and horsemanship to ride a backmarker the cool way Hugh Bowman does.
Hong Kong racing is all about race position and aggression with spots on-pace at a premium, especially with the rail out in the widest position ("C+3") as it was yesterday.
Despite the situation Bowman was content to be near-last on import Mickley and watch the race unfold in front of him and then make a daring run late. It took a little bit of luck to go for a rails run, as it did for Zac Purton earlier when he drove Beauty Alliance to victory along the inside, but it still took Bowman's trademark nerve to thread his run and win an important Class 2.
The calm way Bowman rode Mickley will stand the import in good stead as he works his way through the four-year-old series.
