Baseball showman and icon Willie Mays dies at 93

Baseball icon Willie Mays, one of the greatest players in the sport's history and beloved for his dazzling skill and athletic grace, has died aged 93.

"In the pantheon of baseball greats, Willie Mays' combination of tremendous talent, keen intellect, showmanship and boundless joy set him apart," said Greg Johnson, chairman of the San Francisco Giants for whom Mays played .

Alabama-born Mays made his major league debut in the 1951 season with the Giants, then based in New York.

Three years later he helped the Giants win the World Series against the Cleveland Indians. In that 1954 series, Mays made the famous, jaw-dropping over-the-shoulder catch known as "The Catch."
