Hong Kong hurdler Anson Cheung Wang-fung delivered a standout performance at the National Games athletics meet in Guangzhou on Wednesday, breaking his personal record to secure a place in the men’s 110-meter hurdles final.
Cheung clocked 13.69 seconds in his heat, finishing third in the group and ranking eighth overall among all competitors — just enough to book a coveted spot in the final.
The run marked a personal best for the 28-year-old and continued his steady rise on the national stage. The final will be staged at 9pm tonight.
In the women’s 100-meter hurdles, Asian Games bronze medalist Vera Lui Lai-yiu produced her season’s best time of 13.37 seconds. She also finished third in her heat, but the time fell short of the cutoff for a place in the final.
Her teammate Shing Cho-yan recorded a time of 13.71 seconds in another heat, finishing fourth and likewise missing out on qualification.
Hong Kong’s track and field squad has seen a mix of breakthroughs and near misses in Guangzhou, with Cheung’s advancement offering the team a morale boost as he heads into the final.
