A familiar figure and Hong Kong Sevens hero is back in the city in a new role.
Simon Amor, a former England sevens captain, yesterday began his tenure as Hong Kong China Rugby’s Executive Director for Performance and Representative Rugby.
Amor said he was delighted to come over at an “incredibly exciting time” for the sport in Hong Kong.
He vowed to help the organization achieve its main objectives, including qualifying for the men's and women's World Cups in the 15-a-side game and the men's and women's Olympic sevens.
"I am looking forward to supporting an ambitious and motivated team to drive excellence and alignment across our programs,” Amor said. “I am also looking forward to collaborating with our key stakeholders in the game.”
Amor also worked in the SAR as interim head coach of the men's 15s in late 2021.
HKCR chief executive James Farndon highlighted the importance of Amor's role, as well as the wide range of experience the Englishman brings to the job.
"We are delighted to be able to welcome Simon back to Hong Kong to take up this role. His breadth of experience spans both sevens and 15s rugby – and strategically across men’s and women’s rugby – meaning he is a very good fit for the position,” Farndon said.
In sevens, Amor previously held jobs in Team USA, Japan and Team Great Britain, which he coached. In 15s, Amor worked under Eddie Jones as England’s attack coach and coaching coordinator.
Amor played and coached at the Hong Kong Sevens many times. He helped England win the tournament four times, including in 2004 when he was also named IRB Sevens Player of the Year
Amor takes over from Pete Drewett.
