A driver allegedly lost control of his car while trying to park on a curb in Kwun Tong, injuring three pedestrians.
The 68-year-old driver, surnamed Fong, was sent to the same hospital after telling police that he felt dizzy.
Fong was driving his wife to the Kwun Tong market in a Lexus sedan. After his wife got off, he tried to park the car at around 9.28am on Shui Wo Street.
But the vehicle,as seen in surveillance camera footage from a nearby shop, made a U-turn on reverse and backed onto the sidewalk, knocking down pedestrians and goods at the entrance of a grocery store. The car did a full circle before coming to a complete stop in the middle of the road.
The vehicle's front bumper was ripped off.Police said they believed Fong was trying to park on the side of the street before losing control of his vehicle, which first hit a man before crashing into three shops and knocking down the two women.
The man sustained hand injuries, while one woman sustained injuries to the right side of the body and the other to her head, according to police.Fong passed an alcohol breath test.
After the accident, bystanders immediately went to check on the injured. One of them said: "Luckily, I am fine."A fish stall shopkeeper surnamed Leung said she saw the car mount the pavement at "a very quick speed" before ramming the storefront of a shop. She added: "An old woman was buying shrimp and said she would stand aside to wait. And as she was walking away, the car knocked her over. She was left on the floor and said she could not stand up and walk."
The street is usually crowded but it was "fortunate" there were not many customers yesterday morning, she said."Some noticed the vehicle looked out of control and managed to dodge it, which is why the accident did not cause serious casualties," she added.
"But the vehicle nearly bumped into me and that really frightened me. This is the first time I have seen such a dangerous incident," she said.A worker at a nearby Chinese medicine shop said he was nearly a victim and felt "totally weak at the knees."
Fong was criticized by bystanders, because when he jumped out of the car he went to check the damage to the vehicle and picked up the front bumper."Shouldn't you be checking on [the victims] first?" a witness yelled at Fong. "You just care about yourself!"
Fong then put down his bumper.michael.shum@singtaonewscorp.com
